Heather Yan smMy summer internship at LE TOTE was extremely valuable. Specifically, I wanted to gain experience in marketing within e-commerce and get a taste for startup life. I’m happy to report that I achieved this goal and so much more. While the VP of Marketing had several project ideas for how the MBA interns (there were three of us) would spend our time, I learned that the benefit of working at a startup was that the experience is really “what you make of it.” LE TOTE was a post-series A, 40-person company, and if you wanted support, it was there (you just have to seek it out yourself), while at the same time I had freedom to work on areas I felt passionate about and where I wanted to make impact. The Joy of Interning at Slidejoy

This summer I had the pleasure of working as a tech intern for Slidejoy, an Android app that pays its users to replace their lockscreens with trendy advertisements and news articles. All they have to do is unlock their phones to redeem money. [Editor’s note: Slidejoy was founded by four Wharton alumni: Robert Seo, Sanghoon Kwak, Diana Kattan, and Jaeho Chung. It also won the Perlman Grand Prize in the 2014 Wharton Business Plan Competition!]

At the Intersection of Technology and Social Impact

Sourcing a Close Shave: An Intern at Harry’s

It takes creativity, ambition, guts, and a talented team to break into an industry that has been dominated by Gilette for over a century. That’s exactly the challenge Harry’s, a men’s grooming product start-up co-founded by Jeff Raider WG’10, is tackling by offering customers a convenient, low-cost, high-quality shave.1 I had the opportunity to work at Harry’s for the summer with the Operations team, and as my internship soon comes to a close, I can say the experience has been tremendous.

A Student Intern at a Student Startup

About a month ago, I started my internship at Barring Eyewear, a Philadelphia-based startup that produces high-end affordable sunglasses from innovative materials. I first learned about Barring Eyewear when I pitched alongside its co-founder, Joseph Hwang LPS’15, for the Wharton Venture Initiation Program last fall. Dozens of startups pitched that day, but Barring Eyewear’s stood out to me because while most of the startups were still in the early development stage with little more than an idea and business plan, Barring Eyewear brought in its already manufactured product. A few weeks later at a Weiss Tech House networking event, I recognized Joe from his pitch and reached out to him for advice on my startup, Livedrop. Since then, Joe has acted as a mentor, guiding me through my first year of college as well as providing direction for Livedrop.
