The projects below are listed as an example of type and scope of projects available .

Questions? Email Valentina Goutorova.

VIP Fellows are students with an interest in working at an early stage venture, particularly as one of the first employees or in joining an early stage venture as a co-founder. VIP-Fellowship is an opportunity for these students to learn about startup life, be educated about critical concepts in venture creation, and apply skills learned in their entrepreneurship and innovation classes to a specific project connected to a student-founded venture in Penn Wharton Entrepreneurship’s Venture Initiation Program (VIP).

VIP Fellows commit to a project with a VIP venture for one semester (approximately 10 weeks/ 10 hours per week). As this fellowship is educational in nature and for the student’s benefit, all VIP Fellows are unpaid.

The program is open to all Penn and Wharton students.

Air23

Air23

Air23 is a technology-enabled marketplace that helps physicians run clinical trials in their practice to increase practice revenue and offer novel cures to patients.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

Innovations in medicine have been increasing human lifespan and curing us of ailments for centuries. According to the leaders of Pharmaceutical companies, the greatest roadblock to bringing more life-extending cures to market is finding patients for clinical trials.

Air23 helps solve that problem, and by joining the team you will have a direct impact on the lives of patients around the world.

This semester you will have an opportunity to work with Pharma companies, physicians and their patients as we work quickly to expand our physician network.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

Over the summer we opened our first two physician offices for clinical trials, and have been approved for our first trials!

This semester we will be managing those trials while moving quickly to open new clinical research sites. Our goal is to open 5 new sites by the end of this year!

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

We are looking for two types of skill sets in our VIP Fellows:

  • Strong operations fundamentals – You will work with our physicians, and our pharma companies to create systems and processes to prepare us for growth while driving efficiency from the business model
  • Business development & sales – A person who is not afraid to cold email, or walk into a doctor’s office to encourage them to join our network. You will be helping us expand our reach by building relationships with physicians and pharma companies
  • Product – you love technology, and have a good eye for product development. Your role will be focused on working with the CEO to ideate, wireframe and support building the technology that powers Air23

If you don’t fit this description, don’t hesitate to apply. The company is growing fast and we need all types of skills.

ArchBox

ArchBox

ArchBox provides high-quality physical and digital archaeological experiences by delivering replica artifacts in a subscription box.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

ArchBox will send artifact replicas through subscription boxes, with accompanying immersive digital content. This process involves many moving parts and thus, many opportunities to get involved. This venture will touch on many existing skills and develop new ones. Archaeology is incredibly unique, Penn is one of the leading institutions, and few else are looking to this avenue of commercialization.

Producing the objects involves 3D scanning, 3D printing, IP licensing, manufacturer sourcing, material testing, as well as the typical subscription box eCommerce technology stack. The digital content will require arranging partnerships, design, web development, and project management. On top of all that, there’s market research, product-market fit, customer acquisition strategies, and more marketing strategies to implement.

As a 2018 Venture Fellow, I understand how best to utilize the role. I intend for this to be a partnership where you can focus on the aspects of the business that are the most interesting and where you can add the most value. More than anything, I view the VIP-F position as a trial run for a possible co-founder.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

Implementation is currently on two main tracks: Object Production and Market Research.

Object Production Current: Tested a 3D printed object, tested various materials, began conversations with manufacturers and partners.

Object Production Next Milestones: Further 3D printing, 3D scan testing, material test with partners and manufacturers. Technical expertise would be valuable here.

Market Research Current: Tested messaging with Facebook audience, researched different market segments.

Market Research Next Milestones: Focus groups and conversations, more in-depth market segment research.

Other impact areas: Naming (looking to rename the company), web development, brand development, general business development skills.

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

Curiosity, hard work, independence, and collaboration. Those four characteristics make the ideal colleague and partner.

It is important that the fellow understand and appreciate history. This company is driven by a mission, so the fellow must at least understand that aspect. No previous direct “history” experience is necessary, however.

We believe that this is the last step in helping launch students into a better future. We have built our own problem-solving program and strategies that translate directly to act/sat prep but are also taught to students at a younger age. If you are interested in working at a place that is constantly evolving and going through innovation phases, Amikka is the place for you. We are currently focusing most of our hours on building a more efficient and smooth process for our managers by stream-lining our business processes. This in itself will make it a great experience for you. We are also a very close-knit team of 15 positive people that feed off of our positive reinforcement and great ideas.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

Chefmark logo

Chefmark

Chefmark is an online marketplace for used restaurant equipment.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

Chefmark is an online marketplace for used restaurant equipment – our mission is to create the branded platform to disrupt an industry that has to date been run offline through word of mouth or mom and pop operators. Today, if a restaurant wants to outfit their kitchen with used equipment they are limited to individual outreach to the mom and pop shops like those found in the Bowery in New York or searching on generic sites like EBay and Craigslist. The restaurant equipment market is a $28 billion market, and there is substantial new supply each year from the natural churn of restaurants – we think used equipment should have its own specialized site just as there are marketplaces for used cars, used audio equipment, and used furniture.

Having validated the concept through surveys with restaurant operators and landing page tests, we are now in the process of developing the marketplace, making this an exciting time for a VIP Fellow to be able to work on a marketplace startup from the ground up!

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

We have validated the concept through conversations with restaurant operators and running landing page tests. Every operator has indicated an enthusiastic interest in the marketplace. We are now working through several milestones:

-creation of key marketplace design elements and wireframe sketches for developers

-continued consumerresearch of key user needs

-identifying partners for affiliated services (lease financing, delivery/installation services)

-identifying marketing channels to build the network of buyers and sellers (chef trade associations, restaurant equipment trade shows, individual outreach, referral channels, etc.)

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

We are looking for VIP Fellows with the following backgrounds or interests:

Operations focus – work on sketching out process flows for core marketplace functions, assisting with MVP tests with restaurant operators

Marketing focus – work on developing a B2B brand and capturing consumer insights to help inform content creation and marketplace functionality, identifying buyers/sellers to construct waitlists

Development focus – work through marketplace development issues and assist with overseeing paid developers, assisting with MVP tests with restaurant operators

Anyone who wants to roll their sleeves up working on a marketplace startup and has experience or interest in building online marketplaces is welcome to apply!

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

ConnectED Mobile is unique in that we’re not developing a new product. Rather, we’re revolutionizing the customer experience in a static industry and are modernizing it to meet the needs of our millennial customers. In particular, we serve international students who are most affected by the current restrictions from major network providers. (We eliminate the family plan structure and US credit history requirement of major network providers. )  Since launching 4 months ago, we serve students at over 15 leading universities, and count over 10% of the incoming Wharton MBA class as our customers.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

This past summer, we proved product-market fit as evidenced by our rapid growth, 70+% referral rate, and glowing feedback.  This Fall/Winter, we are investing in building our operations for scale, from platform to supply chain to marketing.

Given our post-launch stage, we plan to scope out meaningful roles that VIP Fellows can take the lead on and execute within a semester:

Florally

Florally: Special occasion faux flower rentals

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

The $27B US floral market is highly fragmented and ripe for disruption. Real flowers are extremely expensive, unsustainable, and unreliable; yet, few alternatives exist in today’s marketplace. Florally offers a curated array of beautiful, affordable, and sustainable arrangements in a rental model direct to individuals and organizations. Our arrangements hold up against repeated usage (30+ times), shipping, and weather.

We’re solving a major pain point in terms of price and sustainability for weddings and special events. Plus, it’s a really fun and tangible product to work with! This is a great opportunity for a VIP Fellow to contribute to product development, customer acquisition strategy, branding, and business development, with the opportunity to get as much hands-on experience as interested.

Our next milestones will be to serve our first wedding and corporate/conference special events with a first signature collection this Fall. We’re looking to bring on a VIP Fellow who can work with our founding team to source local opportunities  (Conferences at Wharton, etc.) where we can place our arrangements and gather customer insights.

We’re also excited to work with a fellow in building our branding for digital marketing and our website (coming soon!)

Frutero – founded by 2 MBA candidates – offers a significant challenge and learning opportunity for someone eager to get into the market, make a statement, and compete. A typical day ranges from crafting partnerships with farms in Colombia, engaging with customers, and negotiating with suppliers. At Frutero, we don’t make PowerPoint slides. We make bold moves and measure success through impact.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

It’s time to scale! Are you ready?

We began the summer with three objectives: (1) validate that consumers love our product, (2) determine achievable store-level sales metrics, (3) refine our business development process. Check, check, check.

With strong sales metrics supporting us, we recently signed a deal with a distributor that services over 2,600 accounts throughout Philadelphia. We are looking for two VIP Fellows to spearhead this effort for Philly and write the playbook for expansion into new markets. The two roles are as follows:

Marketing Manager (Demand Generation): The objective of the marketing manager is to develop and implement marketing strategies that build consumer awareness and drive purchase decisions. Frutero’s key sales metric (defined as sales per store per week) is already exceeding ice cream industry benchmarks, and we are looking for a marketing manager eager to achieve industry leading growth.

Business Development & Sales Manager (Demand Fulfillment): The objective of the business development & sales manager is to lead expansion of Frutero Ice Cream’s retail footprint. • Given that most SKUs are currently sold out, determine optimal quantities required to ship by air versus sea, taking into account costs, delivery times, and current inventory levels

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

We are four student founders who find ourselves frustrated by the same issue: healthcare access for young people. We are working to make booking a doctor’s appointment easier and paying for them more transparent. Moreover, our company is hoping to make it easier for individuals who live in primary care deserts like West Philadelphia to access preventative healthcare services.

As a VIP Fellow, you will have the opportunity to work on an early-stage healthcare startup that aims to make a tangible impact on communities that are primary care deserts such as West Philadelphia. While helping us launch our product, you will learn to rapidly prototype and scale a web and mobile platform as well as help us design our branding and marketing.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

We are in the process of creating our beta platform and have also been focused on securing partnerships with primary care physicians around Philadelphia. We aim to launch our platform in October and rapidly iterate on this as well as grow our userbase.

Our fellow would ideally be able to help us as we create our branding identity and iterate on our platform functionality and design post-launch.

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

We would benefit from working with someone with graphic design or art experience, to help us design some visual assets, including logo, pitch deck, internal documents, and even help with the visual design of the web platform.

Order In

Order In reimagines the “coworking space” as a happiness machine: our physical spaces & member services are designed via scientific research on productivity, community, and fulfilment to help our members achieve their goals and live deliberately.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

Order In reimagines the “coworking space” as a happiness machine: our physical spaces & member services are designed via scientific research on productivity, community, and fulfilment to help our members achieve their goals and live deliberately.

We are a fast-growing venture entering a booming and controversial space, and working with us is an opportunity to make a major impact at a critical juncture for this company.

We are building a prestige consumer brand, powered by a highly rational real estate/finance/proptech strategy. Working with Order In is a unique opportunity for students interested in these categories: building consumer brands, operations/logistics, real estate investing, and finance. An interest in coworking/future of work is great, but not necessary.

The VIP Fellow would work directly with founder JJ Caffey, who is highly experienced in early-stage startup operations, scaling a business, and VC. We are committed to creating an opportunity for our VIP fellow to learn, experiment, and master the topic of their choice. We are also expanding our team, and there are future opportunities available if it’s a good fit.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

Order In is currently fundraising ahead of launching our first physical space in San Francisco. We currently have three priorities: customer traction, fundraising, and space operations.

Our VIP fellow could make an impact in any of these areas, based on their interests.

We have plenty of distinct projects available, and our VIP fellow could choose to focus on: brand building (digital marketing, PR, social media, brand assets etc), real estate/finance (financial modeling, plan to scale, real estate investments), operations/logistics (launch plan for SF space, onboarding partners), or being a proto-CEO (shadowing JJ, a little bit of everything).

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

Scrappiness, a can-do mentality, and enthusiasm about startup operations are more important than any particular skillset. We are looking for someone with experience being responsible for something important, and delivering results.

A skillset in either real estate or digital marketing/social media would be great, but not required.

Reimagining the future of women’s health: empowered by knowledge, healed with herbs.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

Did you know that up to 90% of women experience menstrual pains, resulting in an economic loss of over 1,000,000,000 hours of productivity in the U.S. annually?!

We are reimagining the future of women’s health: empowered by knowledge, healed with herbs.

Currently in beta as #PeriodPainFree – we just signed the former Head of Creative & Brand for Glossier to work on our new brand name and visual identity for our official launch later this year.

Winners of the Penn Wharton Startup Launch Award and a Top 8 Finalist in the 2019 competition, our venture just closed a pre-seed round of fundraising and is building an experienced team to disrupt the femtech space. Join us in empowering women to become more educated about our cycles and our bodies, harmonize our health and feel our best every day of the month.

Fellows will have the opportunity to not only partner with the founding team on the exciting official launch but also work with talented consultants and advisors, expanding your network across tech, VC, retail, healthcare, strategy and brand management.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

Periodpainfree.com is the beta site, currently generating double-digit monthly growth in revenue with 93% of women reporting an improvement in pain and/or symptoms after the first month of treatment. With 500+ orders shipped and 1000+ women who have taken the health assessment, we are now excited to move from beta to the official launch – with new name and site coming this Fall!

Fellows help launch a category-defining brand developing go-to-market strategy, including brand partnerships, content marketing, events and activations, and social impact give-back-model.

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

Do you have a passion for health, wellness and women’s rights? Are you obsessed about building brands with personality, authenticy and ambition? Do you feel ‘the future is female’ and would like to shatter the glass ceiling of access to healthcare solutions?!

If so, then you could be a great fit! We’re seeking the following experiences/skills but believe that anyone with a strong interest in this category can make measurable contributions: strategy and operations, business development, marketing (social media, content creation, market research/pricing, etc) and graphic design.

SAAVHA-Logo-Black with green hash

SAAVHA

SAAVHA is a company whose mission is to help people become comfortable with healthcare technology.  We focus on 4 key tenants: simplicity, security, interoperability, and data rights protection.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

At SAAVHA, we solve real-world problems by using cutting-edge technology to secure and simplify user experiences in healthcare and clinical trials.

We all have had a family member or loved one that has felt uncomfortable accessing medical support or participating in a research study.  Imagine if you could get medical care for a sensitive issue anonymously while still being able to bill your insurance company; if you could avoid extensive paperwork; and immediately provide medical records for your unconscious loved one to the ER doctor by just repeating a phrase to verify you are you.  What if challenges overcoming travel, family, and work to participate in a clinical trial no longer existed; and important communications get to you immediately rather than days to weeks it typically takes today. And what if the technology that enables all of this to occur can decrease the time to get new medications approved by the FDA?  Imagine the impact you could have on the world. SAAVHA is making this possible.

You will have the opportunity to implement technologies (Blockchain, Biometrics, AI) into real-world use cases together with industry leaders.  You will work with our awesome team who are experts in Medicine, Cybersecurity, UX/UI Design, and Computer Engineering.

So, what does all this mean for you and your experience working with us as a VIP-fellow?  Big impact on society, cool tech, learning, real-life application experience, and an opportunity to demonstrate to future employers your capabilities while having fun with us!

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

We are seed-stage venture, with a completed Minimum Viable Product (MPV) for Demo/Implementation. Our company started with technology created through a hackathon that gained us support from members of the U.S. Congress & Senate.  In addition to a beta-tester implementation, we were selected as the Patient Identity Implementation partner for a consortium of Fortune 500 Pharma companies to demonstrate Blockchain in Clinical Trials which was completed this past June.  Now we are primarily focused on working with our partners to establish and launch a 6-month pilot that aims to address the Opioid Epidemic through increasing patient engagement with opioid addiction support and treatment specialists.

VIP fellows will be assigned to a project based on their background and experience in one of the following areas:

#1- Software Engineering: Product (Front-end, back-end, and integrations) and new innovations development.

#2- User Experience/User Interface/Design Testing: Test application implementations for usability and impact on customer-specific key performance metrics.

#3- Market Research/Business Development/Strategy:  Perform market research, data analysis, customer discovery calls, and build product presentations/pitches in one of our use case areas of focuses: Opioid and Substance Use Disorders, Mental Health Support, Clinical Trial Efficiency and Reduced Time for FDA Approval, Medication Alert Secure Patient Outreach.

#4- Content Creation: Draft essays on common ways people feel uncomfortable with healthcare systems and technology and offer some education/low hanging solutions to help reduce that discomfort.  Develop video content to support the Marketing & BD teams.

#5- PR & Marketing: Work with the team and existing news/media contacts to develop a marketing plan and strategy.

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

At SAAVHA, we focus on teamwork and believe in Empathetic Supportive Simple Honest Innovation. We are looking for people who share similar values and who think outside the box to efficiently accomplish tasks that create easy to use solutions/designs.  Applicants should have successfully completed more than 2 years of undergraduate-level education.

If you are a self-starter, like learning new things quickly, and want to show others what you can do, then reach out to us and join our innovative SAAVHA team.

  • What is unique about your venture and why would someone want to work with you? How will your company provide a good experience for the VIP Fellow?

I am working with a venture capital firm towards MVP and product launch. I have head of product (another WG20) and team of developers (in the Penn network) so the product is underway, and we’re still figuring out launch plan, ops, marketing/brand strategy, design, etc. There’s lots to be done in a really exciting time, and our beta will be centered around the Penn ecosystem (our MVP will be on/near campus).

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

We are currently developing the MVP/proof of concept. Our next milestone is bringing on compelling brand partnerships for our offering and developing a go-to-market strategy (including marketing, brand development, sales, ops) for MVP launch.

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

Background in marketing/market research or web app development would be great, but in general, anyone enthusiastic about building out an enterprise platform for consumer insights, helping build a pricing model, reach out to the Penn entrepreneur community, and willing to get creative around launch strategy.

Underdog Investors get access to financial literacy content and access to crowdfunded real estate investment opportunities. Together we have new conversations about wealth and take further actions to create it. UNderdogstuff Capital is a social impact venture that disrupts old ways of thinking about who talks about money and who gets access to high return investments. Let’s build a membership community that invests together in our wellbeing and wealth! Recent blog post about UNderdogstuff Capital: http://bit.ly/2lGX9ke.

I’ve had team members like a VIP Fellow since the start of UNderdogstuff. Everyone has enjoyed their role and described the experience as meaningful and feeling empowered. Plus, the work we do will include interacting with consumers and impact go-to-market decisions.

  • What stage of venture implementation are you currently in? What is your next milestone and how will you achieve it? How can your fellow help make an impact?

UNderdogstuff Capital is in a relaunch stage. UNderdogstuff is preparing for an in-market test of the below concept called UNderdogstuff Capital:

“Introducing UNderdogstuff Capital, the investment community for savers that are ready to become investors. No more thinking that you don’t have enough money to get access to the investment deals you want. No more being frustrated that you haven’t found partners that would follow through. No more starting and then stopping.

Let’s talk about wealth together and put our money together to create it. Some call it crowdfunding. Some call it collective economics. We can call it UNderdogstuff Capital commUNity. Membership for Underdog Investors includes (1) Content + live events related to Financial Literacy and resetting our relationship to money. (2) Access to crowdfunded real estate investment opportunities.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” -African Proverb. Let’s go on this journey together of investing in our wellbeing and our wealth!”

  • What skills and attributes are you looking for in a VIP Fellow?

We are looking for VIP Fellows that want to help more people evolve how they think about wealth and starting new actions to create it. Our team includes people that are curious, committed, creative, conscientious, and enjoy finance.

Potential projects include:

Creating Financial Models: Especially related to evaluating real estate rental property investment opportunities. And determining the optimal financial model for the membership community.

House Hunting (online or in-person): Finding properties and using the above model to evaluate them.

Consumer Research: Develop questions and conduct interviews with potential consumers to better inform the in-market test.

Creative Content: Using an iPhone video and audio, from time-to-time, to record some of the journeys of UNderdogstuff Capital. We will publish the content on UNderdogstuff podcasts or YouTube content.

We can evolve the above once we meet to make sure you get the most out of the experience. The role combines finance, real estate, consumer insights, and creativity.
